Bolbitis heudelotii
Bolbitis Heudelotii, commonly known as the African Water Fern, is one of the most striking aquatic ferns available to hobbyists. Native to the fast-moving rivers of Central and West Africa, it produces deeply lobed, translucent fronds in rich dark green that take on an almost glass-like quality under good aquarium lighting. Growing 8-16 inches tall, it adds dramatic texture and depth to any aquascape -- a favorite for nature-style and biotope setups alike.
Care Requirements Moderate care level. Bolbitis Heudelotii performs best in well-oxygenated water with good flow, mimicking its natural riverine habitat. CO2 injection significantly improves growth rate and frond quality but is not strictly required in lower-tech setups. Sensitive to poor water quality and high nitrates -- consistent water changes are important. Prefers slightly cooler water than many tropical plants.
Placement and Planting Attach the rhizome to driftwood or rocks using super glue gel or thread -- never bury it in substrate, as this causes rot. Excellent as a midground to background specimen where the delicate frond texture can be appreciated. Looks particularly stunning when attached to large pieces of driftwood or tucked into rockwork. The translucent fronds catch light beautifully from behind.
Parameters Temperature: 68-79F | pH: 6.0-7.5 | Lighting: Low-Medium | CO2: Beneficial | Growth: Slow-Medium | Difficulty: Moderate
Usually indicates poor water quality, insufficient flow, or too much direct light. Bolbitis Heudelotii prefers indirect moderate light and clean, well-circulated water. Increase water change frequency and check flow rates near the plant.
