Clown Killifish
The Clown Killifish (Epiplatys annulatus), affectionately known as the Rocket Killie, is a stunning nano fish that brings color, personality, and surface activity to small aquariums. Males display vibrant bars of orange, blue, and red along their bodies, complemented by a distinctive lyre-shaped tail featuring elongated red and blue filaments.
Growing to only 1.5 inches, Clown Killifish are perfect for nano aquariums and planted tanks where they occupy the surface layer, creating visual interest in an often-underutilized area. These gentle fish are far more peaceful than many killifish species and coexist beautifully with small, non-aggressive tankmates.
Native to West African rainforest streams, Clown Killifish prefer dimly lit, heavily planted aquariums with floating plants where they feel secure. They thrive in slightly acidic to neutral water (6.0-7.5 pH) with temperatures between 72-78°F. A secure lid is essential as they're capable jumpers. Clown Killifish accept a variety of foods but show their best colors with quality protein sources.
