Siamese Algae Eater
The Siamese Algae Eater (Crossocheilus oblongus), commonly known as SAE, is the gold standard for algae control in freshwater aquariums. This active, peaceful fish is particularly renowned for its voracious appetite for black beard algae (BBA), one of the most stubborn algae types that plague aquarists.
Growing to 6 inches in length, the Siamese Algae Eater features a distinctive horizontal black stripe running from nose to tail, with a streamlined body built for constant movement. Unlike their Chinese Algae Eater cousins, true SAEs remain peaceful throughout their lives and are perfect additions to community and planted aquariums.
These energetic fish are native to Southeast Asia and thrive in well-oxygenated water with moderate current. They prefer temperatures between 75-79°F and slightly acidic to neutral pH (6.5-7.5). Siamese Algae Eaters are social and do well individually or in small groups in tanks of 30 gallons or larger.
