Black Emperor Tetra
Last import date: 4/30/26
The Black Emperor Tetra (Nematobrycon palmeri 'Black') is the darker counterpart to the classic Emperor Tetra, with a deep slate-to-black body that contrasts dramatically against the bright iridescent blue eyes this species is famous for. Males develop long trailing fins and a bold three-pronged tail, while females stay more compact and rounded. Reaching about 2 inches, they bring elegance and movement to planted community tanks.
Care Requirements: Hardy and adaptable for a tetra, doing well in a wide range of soft to moderately hard water. Best color and finnage develop in slightly acidic, tannin-stained water with a dark substrate and subdued lighting. Plant heavily with driftwood and floating plants for cover. Feed a varied diet of flake, micro pellets, frozen brine shrimp, and bloodworms.
Tankmates & Behavior: Peaceful in community tanks. Not a tight schooler like Rummy Nose, but a group of 6 or more shows their best behavior. Males display to each other harmlessly. Excellent with Corydoras, other tetras, peaceful dwarf cichlids, and shrimp-safe community species.
Parameters: Temperature: 73-81°F | pH: 5.5-7.5 | GH: 3-12 | Difficulty: Easy
A minimum group of 6 is best, with a mix of males and females. Males display their finnage and color most when there is competition, but they do not fight aggressively.
