Blue Eye Lemon Pleco
The Blue Eye Lemon Pleco (Ancistrus sp. 'Blue Eye') is one of the most visually striking bristlenose variants in the hobby. Named for its vivid electric-blue eyes set against a warm lemon-yellow body, this is the kind of fish that stops people mid-scroll. A domestically bred bristlenose variant, it carries all the hardiness and personality of a standard bristlenose while turning the color dial way up. At home in a wide range of setups, it's equally comfortable in a planted display tank as it is in a breeder colony.
Care Requirements Easy — one of the most forgiving plecos you can keep. Blue Eye Lemon Plecos thrive in typical tropical freshwater parameters and adapt well to community tanks. They're active algae eaters and wood raspers, so driftwood is strongly recommended both as a food source and for digestive health. Feed supplementally with zucchini, cucumber, algae wafers, and occasional protein sources like bloodworms. They breed readily in caves — a simple ceramic cave or PVC tube is all it takes to get spawning behavior going.
Placement & Tank Setup Suitable for tanks 20 gallons and up. Add driftwood — it's not optional for long-term health. These fish are bottom dwellers that appreciate caves, flat rocks, and structure to hide in and claim as territory. Compatible with most community fish; males can be territorial with each other so keep that in mind if housing multiples. The yellow coloration pops beautifully against dark substrate and green plants.
Parameters Temperature: 72-82°F | pH: 6.5-7.5 | GH: 5-15 | Lighting: Low-Moderate | Diet: Omnivore (algae, veggies, protein) | Difficulty: Beginner
Blue Eye Lemon Plecos typically reach 4-5 inches at full adult size, making them one of the smaller pleco species available. Their compact size makes them suitable for tanks as small as 20 gallons, unlike larger plecos that quickly outgrow most home aquariums.
