Echinodorus harbich

The Harbich Sword is a classic German hybrid known for its beautiful color transition - new leaves emerge with striking red to burgundy tones before maturing to deep olive-green. A moderate-sized sword reaching 12-16 inches, it's more manageable than giant varieties while still making an impressive centerpiece. Hardy and adaptable, it's been a staple in the hobby for decades.

Care Requirements
Very easy - excellent beginner sword. Tolerates low light but colors best under moderate to high lighting. No CO2 required though it accelerates growth. Heavy root feeder - provide nutrient-rich substrate or root tabs. Trim older outer leaves as they yellow to encourage fresh growth.

Placement Tips
Midground to background depending on tank size. The compact rosette form works well as a focal point without overwhelming smaller tanks. Plant directly in substrate with crown above the gravel line. Leaves grow upward rather than spreading wide, making it easier to place than sprawling varieties.

Parameters:
Temperature: 68-82°F | pH: 6.0-7.5 | Lighting: Low-High | CO2: Not Required | Growth: Medium | Difficulty: Beginner

  • Typically 12-16 inches tall - more compact than giant swords like Radican, making it suitable for 29+ gallon tanks.

I do have snails in my tank.I do my best to pick off what I see. Duckweed have invaded a few tanks but most plants will be free of duckweed. Older leaves may have a bit of algae but I typically clean up all plants before shipping.
