Lake Kutubu Rainbow
Imported 4/30/26
The Lake Kutubu Rainbowfish (Melanotaenia lacustris) is endemic to Lake Kutubu in Papua New Guinea and is one of the most striking blue rainbowfish in the hobby. Mature males develop an electric turquoise-blue body with a dark lateral line and shimmering scale highlights.
Behavior
Lake Kutubu Rainbows are peaceful, active schoolers that thrive in groups of 6 or more. They spend most of their time cruising the mid-water column and respond well to a planted tank with open swimming lanes.
Tank Setup
A 55 gallon long tank or larger is recommended. They prefer slightly alkaline, moderately hard water (pH 7.5 to 8.5, GH 8 to 15), which matches their native habitat and supports the brightest blue coloration.
Diet
Omnivorous and not picky. Quality flake, pellets, frozen daphnia, brine shrimp, and bloodworms all work well. A varied diet supports color and long-term health.
Lake Kutubu Rainbowfish (Melanotaenia lacustris) reach approximately 4 inches. Mature males develop an electric turquoise-blue body with a dark stripe along the lateral line.
