Pygmy Cory (Corydoras pygmaeus)
The Pygmy Cory (Corydoras pygmaeus) is one of the smallest and most endearing catfish species available in the aquarium hobby. Maxing out at just 1 inch, these miniature bottom dwellers pack enormous personality into their tiny bodies, constantly foraging and schooling throughout all levels of the aquarium—not just the bottom.
Unlike larger corydoras species, Pygmy Corys exhibit unique mid-water schooling behavior, often swimming in tight groups with small schooling fish like neon tetras. Their diminutive size makes them perfect for nano aquariums starting at 10 gallons, where they add activity and charm without overwhelming the space.
Native to the Rio Madeira basin in Brazil, Pygmy Corys are peaceful, social fish that must be kept in groups of at least 6, though 10+ is ideal. They thrive in planted aquariums with soft substrate (sand preferred), stable water parameters, and temperatures between 72-78°F. Their silvery-tan bodies feature a distinctive dark horizontal stripe that enhances their schooling appearance.
