Red Neon Rainbowfish
Imported 4/30/26
The Red Neon Rainbowfish (Pseudomugil luminatus) is a striking nano blue-eye native to freshwater streams and swamps in Indonesia and Papua New Guinea. Despite its small adult size of around 1.5 inches, it carries one of the most intense red color patterns in the hobby, with electric red flanks set against an iridescent silver-blue body.
Behavior
Red Neons are peaceful, social, and constantly active. Males flare and display to one another throughout the day, especially in a well-conditioned group. They do best in tight schools of 8 or more, where natural behavior and the strongest coloration emerge.
Tank Setup
A densely planted nano tank with fine-leaved plants, gentle flow, and floating cover suits them well. Dark substrate brings out the red. A 10 to 20 gallon planted tank works for a small school, and they make excellent tankmates for dwarf shrimp, small tetras, and other nano-friendly species.
Diet
Red Neons are surface and mid-water feeders with small mouths. Quality micro pellets, finely crushed flake, frozen daphnia, baby brine shrimp, and live newly hatched brine all work well.
Red Neon Rainbowfish (Pseudomugil luminatus) stay small, typically reaching 1.5 inches at maturity. Males show the strongest red coloration; females are slightly smaller and more silvery.
